What is a “therapeutic parent”?

A therapeutic parent is a loving, caring person that wants to help a child be successful and achieve his or her potential by providing a supportive, nurturing home environment for the child.

A therapeutic parent is a sensitive, committed, well-trained professional; an important member of a child’s treatment team that becomes licensed by the state of North Carolina through APS.

A therapeutic parent is a person that cares so much about others that he or she opens their home to a child with specials needs and/or difficult behaviors.

How does a therapeutic parent help a child to be successful?

  • By providing a safe, predictable, structured home environment;
  • Setting clear, reasonable limits & follows through with consequences – good and bad;
  • Acting as a healthy role model, mentoring to the child;
  • Teaching new attitudes and behaviors to replace the old;
  • Listening to the child with an open mind and compassionate heart;
  • Advocating for the child in school, the community, etc;
  • Providing new experiences and opportunities for physical/emotional/spiritual growth;
  • Recognizing & rewarding the child for being successful; praising a child for being good!
  • Making the child feel secure, valued, and appreciated;
  • Knowing that having faith in a child’s worth and potential can make all the difference!
